How does the body produce healthy hair?
Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the human body and consists mainly of keratin, which is the same material that gives us elasticity in our fingernails. The average person has approximately 100,000 scalp hairs, with some variation depending on the color and texture of the hair. Our hair grows inside a protective encasement called the follicle, and inside each follicle grows one to four hairs. This fact is the foundation for DHI’s newest methods of hair restoration.

What is the hair cycle?
The Anagen (growth) phase is the beginning of the hair cycle, which lasts between 2 to 6 years. Next is the Catagen (non-growth) phase, which lasts between 2 to 6 weeks. During the Catagen phase the hair begins to separate from the follicle. Following the Catagen phase is the Telogen (hair loss) phase, which lasts between 3 to 4 months. During this period your hair is pushed out from the follicle as a new hair forms in the root, beginning the Anagen growth phase again. Hair grows approximately ½ inch per month and faster in women than in men.

The DHI Alopecia Test is a new diagnostic tool that, with the help of a microcamera and a specific software, it allows our experts to analyze and diagnose the current condition of your hair loss, by measuring each hair follicle separately and establishing how many hairs are in anagen or telogen face at the moment. When combined with medical history and a proper medical examination of the scalp, it can lead to the proper diagnosis of your hair loss problem.

How many hairs are lost daily?
On average we lose 100 to 150 hairs daily. Most of this hair loss is due to the transition from the telogen to anagen phase. New hair continues to grow as long as the follicles remain healthy and intact.

What are the causes of my hair loss?
During your diagnostic appointment our doctors can pinpoint the exact cause of your hair loss using our Alopecia Hair Loss Test. At the DHI Medical Group we believe that a correct diagnosis is the basis for great results. There are many factors that can contribute to hair loss, including: scalp bacteria, stress, poor nutrition, genetic baldness (affecting men and women) and hormonal imbalance. Although hair loss may be caused by any combination of these factors, genetic pattern baldness is by far the most dominant factor, accounting for nearly 95% of all hair loss in men, as well as affecting millions of women.

Though male pattern baldness is treatable, because it is genetically predetermined, it cannot be prevented. The DHI Total Care System™ can completely bypass the genetic factors you face by implanting hairs that have not been “genetically programmed” to stop at the Telogen phase.
