The concept of using the Direct Hair Implantation technique to transplant body hair was developed by the DHI research and development team and Professor J.C. Kim of Seoul University in Korea.  The use of the D.H.I. technique in this application has been repeatedly been successful in restoring scalp hair by transplanting healthy hair follicles from another part of the body, such as an armpit or the chest. This hair restoration procedure has enabled us to alter the telogen cycle of body hair resulting in better and faster growth at the recipient site.

Body hair has a different growth cycle than scalp hair.  Scalp hair has been shown to be in the anagen growth phase 90% of the time while body hair is only in an anagen growth phase 30 to 50% of the time.

Below there is a comparison of the scalp hair growth cycle and the body hair growth cycle:

• Patient must allow at least 18 months for transplanted body hair to change its growth cycle to match that of the scalp hair.
• Expected final growth percentage of body hair procedures is between 50% to 80% depending on the quality and growth phase of the body hair follicles at the time of extraction.
• Replacement hair implants are limited to the total number of transplanted body hairs minus 10% (10% of head hair grafts are expected to be in the telogen phase even with normal scalp hair).
• The patient will be responsible for all transportation expenses to return to the DHI clinic in which he had his initial procedure.
• A densitometry reading will be taken before and after treatment to determine total number of body hair grafts placed. If the patient feels the body hair yield at 2 years is not 80%, then DHI will perform another densitometry reading to determine growth percentages and replace any grafts that did not grow or that are not in an anagen cycle up to the total number of grafts transplanted minus 10%.
• Patients will be allowed to view the densitometry reading on a computer screen to see the results for themselves both before and after their session.
• Patient must advise DHI before session that he/she is interested in the body hair guarantee program to ensure the density and growth measurements are recorded and documented.While many of us believe that a transplanted body hair resets its growth cycles once moved to the scalp, there are very few scientific studies performed to verify this belief.
